5 Horror Movie Recommendations

Every Halloween, a selective group of people, watch horror movies to satisfy their scary-movie craving. To kick off the Halloween season right as the horror enthusiast I am. I prepared early by watching a bunch of horror movies everyday in August.

In a world of movies, horror is a genre that is overpopulated, overplayed and overrepresented with a few gems. With the unimpressive techniques of jump scares, siren music and the cliché of having characters make terrible decisions. The horror movies that breakout from these cliches belong in peaks of cinema excellence.

To inspire fear is an art form. Fear has the capacity to make you apprehensive. It's the fear of the unknown, it's the concept of the gap that gets your imagination all worked up. For example, not knowing how you truly did on a test gives many people anxiety. It's the anxiety that paralyzes you because the possibilities are endless.

So in the spirit of getting into the spookiness of Halloween I've compiled majority of the ones I've found to be not only be well-made but hopefully spooky and crippling as my anxiety (psychological horror).

Trigger warning : Please check out the links below each movie to see its content advisory as a safety guide

5. Babadook (2014)

This movie is a 2014 psychological thriller movie made by Jennifer Kents. A single widowed mother is reading aloud a book to her boy, Samuel. As she turns each page, she realizes with each page turn the book's prose gets disturbingly darker and disconcerting. The film is desperately sad. As the mother is being haunted by older memories of her husbands death and taunted by the "Babadook". It's creepy and has very chilling atmospheric moments. If you're looking for cheap jump scares, gores or scary monsters this movie may not be for you. However the movie does definitely explore the disturbing paranoia and realistic side of the genre. It definitely gets under your skin and a movie you'd want to see more than once.

Trigger Warnings

4. May (2002)

May is another psychological movie with a typical slasher outline. The movie is about your archetypal outcast girl named May who grew up with a lazy eye (which I guess was stigmatized during these times enough to not have any friends or social skills) and a overly attachment to a doll she was given on her birthday as she gazes at it through the cabinet. As we explore our heroine we learn she works at an animal hospital as an assistant surgeon. She has a brief romance with a guy named Adam and takes a detour for a lesbian named Polly. When both romances go sour so does our Heroine. The movie parallels "Carrie" in the concept of a women being wounded by society and retaliating in a deadly revenge. If you're trying to see an awkward slasher with your boo, or angry at the world, this may be the prime movie of your night.

3. Good Night Mommy (2014)

Indefinitely Good Night Mommy is a visual thriller. The cinematography can be breath taking or literally breath taking. It has three main characters, twin boys and their mother. However both of the twins grow suspicious of their mother's identity, after her surgery. In a sense the movie's disturbing plot twist can be a nod to The Uninvited or The Sixth Sense. The movie explores the reoccurring themes of isolation, grief, delusion, and paranoia. The pace of the movie can be slow but escalates quickly to disturbingly creepy.

Trigger Warnings

2. It Follows (2014)

After teenage girl Jay sleeps with her date she is handed down the fatal curse that has been passed down from victim to victim. The idea of this 'curse' is that it has no true form. It can take the form as any person, being someone you know or don't. You don't know when it can attack you or what form its going to take place in. The only way you can get rid of it is passing it through coitus. However once one person dies it goes down through the line of people who had previously had it. Throughout this memento mori film there is a strong acknowledgement to Dostrovsky riddled with references. It's set in an alternate universe with their technology. Having one character read The Idiot from a clamshell e-reader, but others watch old monster movies on pre-digital television sets. It Follows is a movie that definitely lingers in your head after following through. It's vague ending provokes a sense of haunted intimacy.

Trigger Warnings

1. Creep (2015)

This film is a rollercoaster of emotions. It made me laugh but not out of sheer humor, however out of forced uncomfortableness. The film centers around two men. Aaron a naive cameramen meets Josef of out the need for money through a cryptic Craigslist ad. Josef is a man who finds out he has a brain tumor and explains that he needs documentation of who he was before his son is born when he's not around to witness him. Through their interaction Aaron realizes that Josef maybe isn't the man whom he claims he is.

[Trigger Warnings]
Profanity, Murder, Frightening/Intense scenes, Partial Nudity, Alcohol

Honorable Mentions: Circle, Occulus, The Invitation, The Conjuring, The Following, The Guest, You're Next

DIY Sailor Moon Notebook

P1010165.JPG

As we approach the end of summer many of us are off to go buy new stationeries. So why not glam up your ordinary college-ruled notebook with a cute Sailor Moon design.

Note : I'm not a very good painter nor do you have to be a pro, but the key is trying your best and not discouraging yourself from trying even if it isn't perfect. You may not be good at something now but with practice you always have potential to get better!

College Advice for Freshmen

After high school majority of people we know choose to pursue higher education. For those who do, college can be an experience where you have the privilege of going to a new city. For others it can be going to your local state or community college. Certainly, there isn't one better way than the other. (Trust me)

I personally have gone off to a California State University in a city around 2 hours from me, but after not being able to figure out what I really want to do and experiencing the unhappiest year of my life (roommate story). I have decided to continue my education in community college, testing the waters of a new major(nursing) while balancing a part-time job.

Besides that here are some advice and tips that I've managed to compile for those who are looking forward to their first year of college from my experience and others.

Adventure: Cafe Maji and Paper Crane

For the Paper crane concert, my friend and a recent new friend I made that day, drove up to LA. Making a pit stop around LA we decided to go to Cerritos and visit this little eatery called Cafe Maji. They offer a vast selection of food from savory to sweet. The cafe had adorable decor that kept to a center theme: an innocent child's bedroom. I have a deep appreciation to the attention of detail that they have put into the cafe.

The menus were uniquely made from photo albums which I found very endearing and simplistic.

Review: Cruelty-free/Vegan Skin Care Products

Choosing a skin care line is important for maintaining healthy skin. With the vast majority of skincare products and lines it can be difficult to find the right product to treat our face. I've gone through a generous amount of facial cleansers. However I've found these cruelty-free and vegan products and quite effective against my occasional breakouts. This post breaks down everything you need to know about some of my favorite (or not) skincare products that I currently own and have been using extensively.

Products being reviewed

Note : I will be reviewing these products by overall effectiveness and ingredients. If you wish to find the details and descriptions of the product there will be links to their Beautypedia reviews below! (For some products)

French Girl Cleanser / Lush Tea Tree Toner / Nature's Gate Moisturizer/ Mario Badescu Spray / Mario Badescu Drying Lotion

About my Skin: I have a combination of having oil and dry skin. It can be oily right around my nose, forehead and cheekbones. But the rest of my face falls into the normal however slightly dry category with occasional breakouts. My breakouts are usually around my chin or the lower half of my cheeks. I also do have pores that are noticeable around my cheeks and nose.

Skin Type: Combination of having an oily complexion and dry

Roommate Horror Story: Filing a Police Report against my Manipulative Roommate

(Actual names have been changed)

It was obvious that someone was stealing my money as it was disappearing the next day, but it took me a while to notice. I was in college, living in an apartment with three other women. However with the trust we established within the three of us I assumed the lost of my stuff was due to my incompetence. Besides that, I was too focused on my studies and classes, managing my mental illnesses, friends and club obligations leaving me little time to ever be protective of my belongings.

In our apartment we had two bedrooms right across from each other. Each room was big enough for two people to share each room. My actual roommate and I got along well. Living in the room across from me was Samoa.

Adventure: Catalina Island 2016

In celebration of my 19th birthday my family and I went to Santa Catalina Island! My dad planned a 2 day trip where we would drive up in the afternoon near Los Angeles and stay at a hotel. In the early morning we would depart from the hotel and go to Dana point (around 6:00A.M)

From Dana Point to Catalina Island was around a 1 hour boat ride and the least of the phase "smooth sailing from here". However during the ride we got to see dolphins and experience some light fog that would make your hair damp.

When we first got to the Island we went straight to riding on the Golf carts and rented it for about 2 hours. Our family drove on a steep mountain and got a wonderful view of Downtown and the pier.

Review: Fjallraven Kanken Classic in Fog 🌹

The Fjallraven Kanken is a Swedish brand backpack is known for its durability and versatility and its many varieties of color you can chose from. It was first originally made for children in the 1970's! So I guess you can say the Swedish kids were rocking a future trend. You can use it for traveling, outdoors, work and etc. Not only is it trendy its unique name but in its simplicity.

I was able to purchase it online Ebay for around $75 around September of 2015. However on Amazon the prices are way much cheaper which is way more reasonable than what I got it for.

With this pricey investment I wanted to make sure it was worth it and I say honestly say I'm completely satisfied with it! So I'll be going over the pros as well as cons of this backpack (not that there are a lot)
